Lough’s Agency visit to Primary 6

15th May 2018

We welcomed Michael from the Lough’s Agency to our class today.  He gave us a history of fishing on the Foyle River, how salmon and other fish spawn and live in the river, what happens to poachers and how to look after the river.  We also did some pond dipping in class, looking at the biodiversity of insects.  Finally we watched a fish dissection; investigated the stomach, heart, liver, spleen, brain, eye ball and lens.  Certainly not for the faint hearted!  We had a great time and thanked Michael for sharing his knowledge and experience of the river with us.

Mrs McCormick gave us test strips for us to test how soft/hard the water in the Foyle is.  We discovered that the water is quite soft.  This tells us that there is little lime in the water and in turn will determine the type of biodiversity found in the water.
