Word play

13th Oct 2016

Primary 6 spent a session developing authorial techniques in class.  Authorial techniques are what authors do to make their stories or poems more interesting.  We investigated:

  • personification - this is when we give an object humanlike qualities.  e.g. The sun danced across the evening sky.
  • onomatopoeia - this is when the word sounds like the sound it makes. e.g. Crash! Bang! Pop! Ka-pow! Miaow.
  • smilies - this is when we compare one thing to another. Similies are very interesting especially when we make use of describing words like adjectives. e.g. as slow as a small, as lonely as a penny in the old man's pocket, as crooked as the lane behind my house
  • imagery - this is when we use our imaginations to think of interesting things to write.  This is where the magic takes place.  There is no limit to what our imaginations can dream of.  We can paint a picture with words and interest the reader.

Now, why don't you have a go!  Anyone can think of a poem or story to write.  Why don't you try one. I would love to read your work!  Why don't you bring it in to school to show me?

PS don't worry about our spelling mistakes! Mrs McCormick spotted them and helped us to correct them.  Our whiteboards are a work in progress!
